Market Report – October
17,
2005
Per
the Almond Board of California position report:
Shipments
reported for September 2005 were 81.52 million lbs.
Almost
a 29% decrease from the figures from September 2004.
The
figures seem to be lower than what many people were expecting. Prices
firmed up through much of September and than softened the week
before the release of the figures. Since the release of the shipment
figures the market has continued to be soft.
We
believe the shipment figures don’t reflect actual loss in demand
because of two main reasons: the later harvest and sales being taken
away by Spain. It’s now said that Spanish processors have sold to
full capacity for nearby shipments and is not selling as
aggressively. As we indicated in the last market report, later
shipment reports should be more reflective of where demand currently
is. October shipments should be strong, we’re not sure about
November, which is particularly hard to predict with so much hand to
mouth buying still being done.
Our
harvesting and other grower’s harvesting in the central part of the
state should be all finished by the middle of this week. Harvesting
is done in the southern areas and should be finished in the northern
part of the state soon after we finish. Though we experienced a few
rains over the last few weeks, we don’t know of any major product
losses or damage as a result.
Best
