Report – December 10th,
2006
Per
the latest Almond Board of California position report:
Shipments
reported for November 2006 were approximately 111 million lbs.
This
is about 24% above the November 2005 figures.
The
market has been slowly but continually increasing since the third week
of
September. These large shipment figures
for November, a near record, demonstrate that demand has recovered
greatly
since last season and that more reasonable prices have reached the
consumer
level.
With
the later harvest we still do not know too clearly the crop total based
off the
Almond Board receipts but we are expecting something close to the NASS
estimate
of 1.05 billion lbs. Below are charts
showing shipments for recent crop years along with hypothetical
scenarios for
this season. The first chart assumes we
continue at a pace equal to the past four months (10.1% above the
average
shipments for the past three season) and the second chart assumes that
for the
balance of the crop year we continue at a pace equal to the average of
the past
three seasons:

If
the crop does come in at just 1.05 billion lbs., or less, it would be
very
difficult for the industry to continue shipping at the same pace we
have been,
as we would not have enough product for a reasonable carry-in to the
new
crop. These strong shipments for the
past few months and the large commitment figure (nearly 66% committed
or
shipped) should contribute
to a continued firm market.
