Report – August 9th,
2007
Per
today’s Almond Board
of California position report:
Shipments reported for
July 2007 were a record 82
million lbs.
- Up 36%
from the July 2006 figures & up 10% from the previous record
- Domestic
shipments were up 16.3% & exports were up 49% - both records
- Shipments
for the season were also a record, up 16.6% vs. last season
SHIPMENTS/DEMAND:
Strong
shipment figures were expected for July but we believe the actual
figures turned out higher than most expected. Its important to keep
in mind that export shipments are effected by inventory in those
regions and you cannot look at one month or even two months and
accurately estimate demand for the region. Large inventory in
various export markets lead to poor shipments during the Spring
months, and shortages in some export markets during late June and
July, particularly in Europe, helped contribute to very strong
shipments for July.
Below
is an overview of
shipments to different parts of the world for the 2006 crop year:

THE 2007 CROP:
We received our first new
crop almonds this afternoon. The Nonpareil harvest is running about
7-10 days ahead of last season, but this is a work in progress and
weather will continue to impact this. The majority of the harvesting
completed was in the southern part of the state as well as some in
the north. Initial quality reports are showing low insect damage. We
expect to receive smaller kernel sizes from the earlier harvested
orchards and anticipate improved kernel sizing as the season
progresses.
SUPPLY & DEMAND
ANALYSIS:

Possible Scenarios for
the 2007 crop, assuming crop receipts per NASS’s estimate:

THE OUTLOOK:
On
August 1 the Almond
Board of California recommended to the USDA that implementation of
the mandatory pasteurization program for North America be delayed
until March 1, 2008. We anticipate the USDA will approve this
recommendation prior to September 1. As stated by Richard Waycott,
the Almond Board President, the action was taken “to ensure there
is sufficient capacity in certified pasteurization facilities to
deliver uninterrupted supply.”
Continued
shipment growth
will be needed throughout the majority of this season. We believe
demand remains a much bigger unknown than the crop size. Historically,
in seasons with record crops and lower prices, demand
for almonds has grown beyond people’s expectations.
