Almond Market Report - February 7, 2008

The Almond Board of California reports:

January 2008 shipments were a record 97.1 million lbs.
   - About 14% above January 2007 shipments – the previous record
   - Domestic shipments were up 18.2% and exports were up 12.3%

Pricing came off in mid to late January, following the less-than-expected shipments in December and poor market sentiment. Many were anticipating weak January shipments, but the figures released today turned out to be very impressive. Domestic shipments came back strong after a weak December.

SHIPMENTS/DEMAND:

Shipments so far are up 14.3% for the season. Every month since June has been a record. Below is an overview of shipments for the season:

Region
Percent of Market Percent Growth
Western Europe 37.3 19
U.S.
29.4 6
Asia
17.8 10
Middle East
7.2 45
Rest of North America
4.1 23
Eastern Europe 2.7 26

THE 2007 CROP / RECEIPTS:

Receipts as of January 31 were 1.357 billion lbs, up 24.3% from the same time last season, and slightly above the NASS estimate of 1.33. Nonpareil receipts of 519.5 million lbs. are 13.6% above ’06 crop Nonpareil receipts and 10% above NASS’ estimate. The large Nonpareil crop is what contributed to the total crop coming in larger than expected.

THE OUTLOOK:

Generally the trees are in great condition going into bloom. There are plentiful bee supplies and concerns about water have been reduced with recent rains. Bloom, which is still not underway, will be very weather dependent since these other issues are less of a concern at this time.

We expect today’s position report to improve market sentiment going forward.
