Almond
Market Report - March 7, 2008
The
Almond Board of California reports:
February
2008 shipments were a record 85.9
million lbs.
We
have seen a lot of small jumps and drops in the market over the past
month; most notably the .10/lb. or so drop in pricing from late Feb
till yesterday.
SHIPMENTS/DEMAND:
Shipments
are up 14.7% for the season. We have continued to see record
shipments every month since June. Shipments for the season by region

THE
2007 CROP / RECEIPTS:
Receipts
as of February 29 were 1.376 billion lbs, up 25% from the same time
last season, and 3.5% above the NASS estimate of 1.33.
BLOOM:
Weather
conditions during bloom have generally been very favorable. Bee
flight hours have been excellent. While bee supplies are abundant,
some growers were disappointed by the low quality of the hives
received. Observations have been made that the Nonpareil budset and
bloom were less vigorous than for the other varieties, whose budset
and bloom looked very good. No serious estimation can be made at
this time because we are looking at flowers rather than nutlets.
THE
OUTLOOK:
The
2008 crop is very difficult to assess at this stage and there are
differing opinions regarding crop size. Until we have more agreement
we will likely continue to see an unclear market.
