Almond Market Report - April 8, 2008

The Almond Board of California reports:

March 2008 shipments were a record 91 million lbs.
- About 29% above March 2007 shipments
- Domestic shipments were up 15% and exports were up 38.5%

We have seen continued volatility; both down and up, then down and up again since our report one month ago.  The current market sentiment is very bullish, especially in the grower community.

SHIPMENTS/DEMAND:

Shipments are up 16% for the season.  We have continued to see record shipments every month since June.  Shipments for the season by region are:

Region Percentage of the Market Percentage Growth
Western Europe 36.7 22
U.S. 30.5 7.8
Asia 17.8 13
Middle East 7 39
Rest of North America 3.9 20
Eastern Europe 2.9 24

THE 2007 CROP / RECEIPTS:

Receipts as of March 31 were 1.377 billion lbs, virtually unchanged from the previous month.

THE OUTLOOK:

Expectations for the 2008 crop continue to vary, by a few hundred million lbs. in some cases.  The Nonpareil crop appears to be off from last year throughout the state in the majority of orchards.  As was expected given the crop last year, the south and west sides look to have strong crops and the central and northern areas of the state look to be down from 2007.  We have continued to hear more reports of inconsistent crops by orchard and even within orchards.  On May 7 we expect to receive NASS’ subjective crop estimate, which could bring some clarity to the market.

March shipments were much stronger than most expected, as many doubted we would even see a record.  Our short-term outlook is for a firm market but we may be surprised and see ups and downs, even prior to the May estimate.
